How To Talk To Your Kids About the Miley Cyrus VMA Performance

So you may have heard about Miley Cyrus' performance at the VMAs.  Don't worry, I'm not going to add to the already robust discussion of sexism and racism that swirled around her act and the media's reaction to it (if you haven't read some of the discussion I have some link below.)

Instead, I thought this was a great example of the type of controversial media that invites meaningful conversation with our kids if we know how to talk about it in a way that encourages open dialog. Learn 4 techniques for open dialog with your kids!  I call it ARLO and it stands for:

  • Ask

  • Reflect

  • Listen

  • Observe

With these methods you can avoid lecturing, disagreeing, or other dialog ending habits.
